Learning by inspiring examples

In Climate Education, Climate Entrepreneurship, Living Legends, World Tour by Monique van Dam

If your young person asks: how do you want to learn? Is the answer: learning from good examples that inspire and that you can look away from. Refrain from copying the example or getting inspired to develop your idea for change into a project or start-up and become an inspiring example yourself.

In 2013, a 1st youth team aged 10-30 therefore designed the Living Legends concept, which has gradually become the basis of the Living Legends School. This concept is about:

  • Living Legends are young people aged 10 to 30 who are prepared to develop their idea for social and sustainable change into a local project or start-up, with which they undertake and implement the change they see in their local community.
  • But also young people who are willing to let others copy their idea, project or start-up and to help each other with this. So that the example of change can be quickly copied and spread worldwide. Low budget, bottom up, by learning from and with each other.

Sharing, helping and copying are the keywords in the Living Legends concept, with which young people see themselves organizing informal education and entrepreneurship to roll out good examples worldwide. And thus, in a simple and practical way, to kick-start an acceleration that is much needed.

Inspirational example & teacher

A Living Legends is an inspiring example, but also a teacher who shows online and easily how you can copy the example in your own lifestyle or community. A teacher who trains and coaches interested young people online in learning communities.

Learning communities, globally connected

The Living Legends concept is also about learning together about basic needs, the essential topics that all youth should be able to learn about in order to be ready for current and future challenges. The themes of water, food, energy, greening, biodiversity, ICT & technology.

In 2022 Mirte, Gijs, Leroy and Luca from Eindhoven, in collaboration with Pradeep from Nepal, Augustine from Kenya, Jean Paul and Florence from Rwanda and permaculture expert Alice from Geldrop, made the design for the 1st Learning community about Permaculture.

Global co-creation for informal educaiton about current topics

In the video they show how young people from different countries learn about important inclusion and climate themes through Learning Communities.

Making change together in the We Grow Together community

With the online Learning Communities and e-learning modules on the themes of water, food, energy, greening, biodiversity, ICT & technology, all youth gain access to informal education on the 1st essential themes and become able to copy examples using Living Legends.

In the international We Grow Together community, youngsters (new Living Legends) can share their idea for change and find help from young people and partners who help them to develop the copied example or their own idea for change into a project or start-up. More on that next week.

Finally, for those who know this remarkable man, this is what how he sees the Living Legends concept

The Living Legends School unites two important dimensions that are critical to the survival of our species. On the one hand developing and sharing insights about what is needed to live in harmony with the planet and on the other hand international cooperation that contributes to growing planetary awareness. I hope that the Living Legends concept will be successful in preparing a new generation for what they have to do evolutionarily.” – Herman Wijffels –
